South African Nursing Council
Guidance for those wishing to set up a Private Practice

There is nothing contained in any of the South African Nursing Council’s regulations which prohibits a nurse from setting herself up in private practice, provided she practises within her scope of practice and does not contravene the rules setting out the acts or omissions which could lead to disciplinary action by the Council.

The two sets of regulations concerned are:

bulletRegulations relating to the scope of practice of persons who are registered or enrolled under the Nursing Act, 1978 (Government Notice No. R.2598 of 30 November 1984); and
bulletRules setting out the acts or omissions in respect of which the Council may take disciplinary steps (Government Notice No. R.387 of 15 February 1985).

They can be purchased from the Council at R6-90 each (R4-00 each and R2-90 postage) VAT included. The Nursing Act, 2005 is also available at R62-90 (R59-00 plus R3-90 postage) VAT included. These documents are also available at no cost on this website - just click on the required document name above.

The S A Nursing Council does not issue practice numbers. You are therefore advised to direct any request in this regard to the Board of Health Care Funders of South African (BHF), P O Box 2324, Parklands, 2122. BHF telephone number is (011) 537 0200.
